ScaleArc Selects DealerSocket’s Michael Atkins as “Uptime Hero”


Atkins Earns Top ScaleArc Customer Award Recognition for Continued Application Availability During Database Failover and Zero Downtime Maintenance

Santa Clara, Calif. – Dec. 15, 2016 – ScaleArc, the leading provider of database load balancing software that provides continuous availability for applications, today announced the latest winner of its Uptime Hero Award. Michael Atkins, Director of IT Operations at DealerSocket, leads the team that manages uptime and performance for the company’s SaaS offering for auto dealerships around the globe. Atkins has helped DealerSocket scale infrastructure, rebuild its data platform, and upgrade its database infrastructure to vastly reduce downtime – all to keep up with the company’s incredible growth. DealerSocket’s SaaS offering empowers more than 10,000 auto dealerships and 300,000 users across the United States, Canada and Australia. Dealers use the platform to improve profitability through a fully integrated suite of marketing, sales, service, customer experience, dealer management system (DMS), data mining and inventory management solutions. DealerSocket is on the forefront of the SaaS revolution, offering its customers the “Salesforce of dealerships.”

“Car dealerships, just like every other industry, are under pressure to embrace digital transformation and data analytics, but they can’t do it themselves,” said Atkins. “They are turning to SaaS offerings to give them the rich insights into their customers and service them in a more tailored way.”

Atkins, who has run IT operations for DealerSocket since 2011, manages the SaaS platform with a team of nine. The deployment includes 80 SQL servers running 4000 customer databases, and Atkins and his team must ensure consistent uptime and performance.

Recently, DealerSocket’s customer base has grown, and given the worldwide locations of auto dealers on their platform, there is no time for downtime. “If we’re not running, our dealers’ businesses aren’t running,” said Atkins.

Atkins and his team scaled Dealersocket’s infrastructure to keep up with its incredible growth but found the toughest infrastructure piece to bullet proof was the database. To vastly reduce downtime, DealerSocket rebuilt its data platform, upgraded its database to support scaled out infrastructure, and added ScaleArc, database load balancing software that ensures that apps are never down, always fast, and scale anywhere.

Atkins deployed ScaleArc and immediately saw the uptime impact. “We had instances of database failover during our business hours and no customers noticed,” says Atkins. “That is huge for us.”
